KCHP NEWS
A Message from the KCHP President

Happy New Year and best wishes from KCHP. 2012 looks to be an exciting year as health-system pharmacists can expect multiple challenges and opportunities. Several issues will stand at the forefront of our focus throughout 2012.

You have received several communications from KCHP regarding ASHP’s Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative (PPMI). KCHP is committed to assisting ASHP with the initial survey and providing data for use at the national and state level to further define the overall goals and objectives of the PPMI, as well as how these will be used to implement practice changes throughout Kansas and the nation. The results of the survey information will be shared through ASHP, but also through KCHP at the Annual Meeting in April. Please complete your survey as soon as possible to assist with these efforts. Our goal deadline is currently January 31, 2012.  Read More

KCHP Foundation Makes Donation to the ASHP Foundation
The KCHP Foundation took advantage of the recent ASHP Midyear in New Orleans to give its first-ever donation.  The Foundation donated $250 to the ASHP Foundation to help the organization in its goals to create and manage quality research, education and leadership programs responsive to the needs of the ever evolving pharmacist profession.

"Knowing that this is the very first contribution made by the KCHP Foundation in support of the ASHP Foundation's advancement of pharmacy practice and research makes this a very special gift!" said Stephen Allen, MS, FASHP, Executive Vice President and CEO of the ASHP Foundation.

"I am so impressed with the many projects and services that the ASHP Foundation supports," said Linda Radke, PharmD, BCPS, President of the KCHP Foundation."  "It is exciting that KCHP has initiated our foundation with similar goals for our members. I am very proud of the support KCHP members have given to the KCHP Foundation in its first year and would encourage our members to consider continuing support to both worthy organizations."

"In 2010, KCHP formed a foundation for which its mission, vision and values align closely with the ASHP Foundation," explained Mark Woods, PharmD, FASHP, BCPS, Chairman of the KCHP Foundation.  "KCHP members have benefited greatly from the work of the ASHP Foundation over the years. This year’s Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative is a prime example. Naturally, it makes a lot of sense for the KCHP Foundation to make its initial donation to the ASHP Foundation, an organization we greatly admire and respect."

FEATURE STORY
Pharmacy Practice Model Changes: A Success Story
Pharmacy Practice Model changes have been a hot topic in health-system pharmacy for several years. While few would dispute the value of moving pharmacists into a more integrated role within the health care team, the prospect of doing so can seem daunting. Recently, Greg Strohs, Division Director of Pharmacy for the Hospital Corporation of America’s (HCA) MidAmerica Division took some time to share the successes his company has had with shifting the pharmacy practice model and what it means for patients.  Read More

PPMI Survey Deadline Quickly Approaching
The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) is spearheading the Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative (PPMI) across the country by surveying its members about issues related to PPMI. This Initiative is designed to reflect the changes the profession has seen over the past decades and to better prepare it for changes on the horizon.  The deadline for survey submission is January 31, 2012.

As the recognized ASHP affiliate, the Kansas Council of Health-System Pharmacists (KCHP) wants to lead Kansas hospital pharmacies to complete this survey soon and place the state on the leading edge of pharmacy practice. This tool needs only be completed by one representative within your department, but may require input from multiple colleagues. It should take no more than an hour, and may be completed in more than one sitting. You may also print the PDF survey to complete it on paper prior to entering the compiled data. You will receive a summary of your survey from ASHP once completed.  Complete the Survey

The results of surveys completed across Kansas by this date will be compiled by ASHP and presented during the KCHP/MSHP Annual Meeting on April 19-21, 2012 in Kansas City. This will be a great opportunity for you to see where your hospital stands compared to others in the state when it comes to achieving PPMI goals.

Drug Shortages—Congress Listens, FDA Acts

As 2011 drew to an end, Congress held a fourth hearing on the nation’s shortage of prescription drugs.  None of the hearings, however, have been held for the specific purpose of discussing legislation pending action in the Senate or House of Representatives.
None of the hearings, as of press time, have resulted in new legislation regarding drug shortages. But, coincident with the hearing held December 15, FDA issued an interim final rule that partially addresses an issue common to Senate bill 296 and House bill 2245.  Read More
